CiteRefs ASTERISK AID - 02
There are possible author(s) to the left of this date, but we could not match the author(s) plus the date to a reference.
Possible reasons:
- The date is not intended to be part of a citation and the presence of an author's name is accidental.
- The citation and reference dates do not match.
- The intended reference is missing from the reference list, or invalid due to a reference list error.
- One or more authors of a multi-author citation are misspelled, capitalized differently, or missing (see example below).
- An 'et al.' is needed.
- The capitalization or spelling of the authors does not exactly match that of the reference.
- The reference is a legal reference following the Blue Book standard. CiteRefs sometimes has trouble with these.
- One or more authors' name has a diacritical mark (accent) in the reference but not the cite, or vice versa. Example: (German) Böll in one, but Boll in the other.
- The citation is correct, but you used an unusual construction.
Finding the Error in a Multi-Author Cite:
If some authors in a multi-author cite are colored red and others black, then the black-colored author closest to the date is the one causing the problem.
Example:
" ... Barker, Hvrokovsky, Smith, and Wilson (2003)* ...",
Hvrokovsky is the likely culprit. Check for a spelling or capitalization mismatch between the cite and the reference, or for a missing author in that spot.
