• The date is not intended to be part of a citation.
• The intended reference is missing or invalid due to a reference list error.
• An author's name is misspelled.
• The author(s) are more than a few words away from the date (consider moving the date closer to them).
• The reference is a legal reference following the Blue Book standard. CiteRefs sometimes has trouble with these.
• The citation is correct, but you used an unusual construction.
• One or more authors' name has a diacritical mark (accent) in the reference but not the cite, or vice versa. Example: (German) Böll in one, but Boll in the other.
